Golf Cart Battery Maintenance: Voltage Chart, Charging Protocol & Winterizing Guide

Published Updated

A golf cart battery voltage chart helps estimate charge level when the battery type and measurement conditions match the reference. It does not, by itself, prove battery health or remaining driving range. Identify the battery chemistry and pack configuration before comparing a reading.

Golf cart battery voltage chart: 36V and 48V flooded lead-acid packs

The selected values below come from Trojan's flooded-battery maintenance reference. They describe open-circuit readings, not voltage during charging or driving. For that test, Trojan specifies at least six hours without charging or discharging, preferably 24 hours. Confirm applicability with your own battery manufacturer.

Selected Trojan flooded lead-acid open-circuit reference values, in volts
Charge level 6V battery 8V battery 12V battery 36V pack 48V pack
100% 6.37 8.49 12.73 38.20 50.93
80% 6.25 8.33 12.50 37.49 49.99
50% 6.02 8.07 12.10 36.31 48.41
20% 5.83 7.77 11.66 34.97 46.63

Pack readings are the manufacturer's published values; multiplying rounded individual-battery values can give slightly different results. These are charge-level references, not universal replacement thresholds.

AGM and lithium golf cart batteries need different references

Do not apply the flooded-battery table to every lead-acid battery. Trojan's AGM and AES AGM guidance has a separate open-circuit table and charging requirements. Sealed AGM batteries must not be watered; equalization instructions for flooded batteries do not apply to them.

For lithium packs, use the battery's specified charge indicator, compatible display or battery-management-system information. Trojan's lithium resources explain its indicators, BMS monitoring and storage requirements. A flooded lead-acid voltage chart is not a lithium state-of-charge chart. Use the manual for your actual pack rather than assuming that every nominal 48V system is identical.

What does a low golf cart battery voltage mean?

Trojan's troubleshooting FAQ explains that voltage alone does not confirm a battery fault. An unusual reading is a reason to investigate, not an automatic instruction to replace the pack. A technician can check individual batteries, connections and, where appropriate for flooded batteries, electrolyte specific gravity.

Record the battery model, pack arrangement, test conditions and individual readings before requesting service. A 48V pack can contain eight 6V, six 8V or four 12V batteries in series; use the battery labels to identify the configuration. Do not infer battery voltage from a Club Car, EZGO or Yamaha serial prefix.

If you cannot safely access the terminals, have a qualified battery technician perform the measurement. Use the vehicle and battery manuals for isolation procedures; do not bridge terminals with tools.

Charging, watering and winter storage

For serviceable flooded batteries, follow the manufacturer's water-level instructions. Trojan advises keeping plates covered before charging and making the final water-level adjustment after a full charge. Sealed AGM and lithium packs require different care.

Choose the charging profile, connection procedure and storage routine from the manual for the exact battery and the vehicle/charger manuals. This guide does not prescribe a universal charging current, equalization voltage or timed winter refresh charge. A generic online chart cannot select those settings for an unidentified system.

Common questions about golf cart battery voltage

Why does my 48V pack read more than 48 volts?

The nominal system label differs from an open-circuit or charging reading. In the flooded reference above, full charge corresponds to 50.93V at rest. Compare readings only under the stated conditions.

Can this chart predict how many miles remain?

No. A charge estimate is not a range test. This page provides a reference table and manufacturer resources; it does not offer an interactive battery health or range calculator.

Can I use the chart while the charger is connected?

No. The table specifies open-circuit conditions. Charging readings need the applicable charger and battery specifications.
